new series: SILF day one

Earlier this year I did a [sporadic] week series on my favorite mashups.

Now I'd like to do a week of SILF (Songs I'd Like to Fuck)

First is the Aeroplane Italo 84 Remix of Kilometer by Sébastien Tellier.

Initially this remix sounds like just another remix of Kilometer (of which there are many). But starting from 3:13 on, where it starts to mellow out with the background melody that gradually and gradually is brought to the forefront when it finally explodes at 3:43 is ultimately orgasmic. Those 30 seconds of build are the audio foreplay to the final minute (plus) of absolute FUUUCK.

Sorry for that paragraph, but seriously, everytime 3:43 hits I always have to close my eyes and ride that high and if I could word it better I would but. I can't.

I have a bad habit of being an MP3 packrat. I am still holding onto some MP3s I got back in 1999 and 2000, in the days of yore AKA Napster.

The other day I finally upgraded my circa 2000 128kpbs Shanks and Bigfoot to 320kbps. It took a lot of strength to delete an MP3 I had for 9 years, with the whole packratty tendency.

I rarely enjoy seeing live music anymore. I think it is because I have become a robot. Last night I decided to see my friend Matt Celio's band November Loop at Cedar's in Youngstown. I admit, my intentions were not purely to see his band: they were opening for a cute indiepop band I've heard of before called Casper and the Cookies. I heard of them via their covering Of Montreal (which I drunkenly blathered to "Casper" Jason Nesmith, only to find out today, embarrassingly, he was in OM at one time. Shoulda done my research prior), and had a couple other tracks so I wanted to hear more.

I was drunk so that may have helped, but I had so much fun. My friend and I were the only two people dancing during most of the set, eventually we dragged some people out of the depths to dance with us. But really, their set was so damn cute (Amber kept saying "I want to take them home with us!") and so full of energy that I couldn't help myself.

I am not one to write much on music as you can tell by my blog, so I'll just let you take a listen.

Pre my electro explosion/implosion, I was really into indie pop. I still am, just, not as often. I still have my love for Of Montreal, despite their winning "Gayest Album of the Year:" Skeletal Lamping. I am not even kidding, that album is gay in many senses. Just not the happy one. Any album that has a song that starts out with "I'm so siiiick of suckin a diiiick" wins Gayest Album in my book.

Back before Kevin Barnes got all wannabe gay (or Fauxmosexual per Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down), he was only slightly ambiguously gay. Maybe in the cutely bi-curious way. And he wrote albums as good as Coquelicot, Aldhils, or The Bedside Drama.

The hardest part of creating/running an indie dance night is all the people who come up to you asking you to DJ/do themed nights. I never know what to say, especially because most times I am dubious of their ability/the theme, so I always say "well let me ask Bri and Charles" or "talk to Bri and Charles." I am too nice to say "well, I really don't think that'd work."

I can't wait to take the name to Chicago where I will be a stranger and so people won't come up to me because they don't know me.

BLOGHAUS - I feel like there is something fundamentally wrong with me in being obsessed with "indie-electro" ie electro/electroclub/BLOGHOUSE. Seriously, live bands and real instruments do nothing for me anymore. Really, they never did much in the first place. I think I had been waiting all my life for this movement of music. That sounds pretty gay.

MGMT - I kind of don't want to like them anymore just because of what surrounds them. Luckily (for myself) I am not punk.

I think that's what it is - Electro makes my heart beat. I always was too shy/ashamed to dance and I think it's cos electro never existed. I was never able to dance until now to the only music that doesn't make me look completely derelict when attempting to dance.

"Keedz are Universal France new Justice.

Yep, give it a year and they are trying to sell out your style of sound. Justice gained a huge ball of popularity during 2007, esp. with their super banger track DANCE.

"Stand On The Word” was first ever recorded live in the First Baptist Church in Crown Heights, NYC, in 1982. Soon after the church pressed up a couple of hundred copies for the congregation, a couple of blocks away from Walter Gibbons’ Jus Born recording studios. Walter Gibbons had already turned new born Christian since a few years, avid Gospel records collector with that; and played the original recording often behind the counter at the 7th av. Rock and Soul shop were he worked. Walter Gibbons must be credited to have revealed this Phyllis McKoy Joubert song to New York most discerning DJs and soulful dance music aficionados, as it quickly became a Garage, Loft and Zanzibar club classic and ended up remixed by Tony Humphries for this wider release.

But then DJ Larry Levin re-edited it and made it an instant disco favorite. This is when Justice used his re-edit to create their song, DANCE."

I really hate that attitude of "OH I CANNOT LIKE THIS BAND ANYMORE BECAUSE THEY ARE POPULAR FOR TOO LONG THUS THEY ARE NO LONGER GOOD!" I swear so many blogs and people are touting this superiority and flat out refusing to like a band or label or song simply because of its popularity level.

Who gives a shit if everyone wants to say I HEARD IT FIRST? Who gives a shit if frat boys listen to Justice? Who gives a shit if they made a bad song in the past or might in the future? Why can't you enjoy a good thing while it is here?

As a DJ (beginner albeit) I want to do something unique and not discriminate based on how old or popular a song is. Because on the dancefloor, no one gives a shit. They wanna dance.

Um finally got on the Crookers remix of Busy P. I really enjoy it.

Oh dude also finally started listening to the Tepr albums I got. Was delightfully surprised.
